The Battle of Crimdur Pass - An Unholy Alliance!

The forest was dark but dawn was approaching. The scouts had been holed up in the abandoned precinct for days reporting enemy movements. The hellish raiders had plagued this forest for months now but a new enemy had arisen. Necrons! Together, the two enemy forces were now in a position to assault the pass. For what purpose? Victims? To conquer? or simply carnage? If they succeeded thousands of Imperial civilians in the towns would be in danger. Not this day! Evodius held aloft his scythe and marched out of the damp woods. They would stop them here!

Team Rottimus:
Black Scorpion Assault company (baal strike force) - Evodius (astorath), A death company and two drop pods with flamer tacticals. 3 bikers with grav guns
Black Scropion Artillery company (Ultramarine CAD) - Captain Zaitus (telion), sniper scouts, 2x scouts in landspeeder storms, 3 thunderfires, 3 dreadnoughts and a two grav cannon 6 man dev squad in a third drop pod.

Team Evil (Rik and Jack)
Dark Eldar Venoms, scourges and a wraith knight! (unbound)
Necron Decurion with Lord and Lychguard

2000 pts - Maelstrom of war - Mission 1 (max 3 cards)

Full frontal nudi... I mean attack!
TURN 1

Team evil or 'The Boner Alliance' as they called themselves...Because Necrons are bone coloured and because Dark Eldar love Bo....you get the idea.

They won the roll to deploy first and deployed agressively, the Wraithknight at the front, the Necron Lord and his retinue ready to assault the precinct!

My forces deployed conservatively. My thunderfires save behind an old comms centre. The precinct was bolstered by my techmarines. Telion and the scouts would enjoy a 2+ cover save (4+ ruins, 3+ for stealth and 2+ bolstered!) 3 dreadnoughts deployed together ready to press their own flank attack. I'd be facing necron gauss and massed poison shooting 100+ shots per turn!

Two landspeeder storms full of scouts and the death company deployed behind the precinct with bikes in front (a bad move)

Ready to weather the storm!
The forces of evil sallied forth. The wraith moving up, Necrons marching forward. Tomb blades moving towards my dreadnoughts on the right flank. Open fire! Poison shots by the bucket load annihilated my bikers in one swift blow. Peppered to death by shards of splinter fire. First Blood! My scouts weathered a ton of shots but their 2+ cover save saved all but 1. A death company marine was also downed. The remaining venoms shot at the techmarine on the comms centre. His 2+ armour held true! They scored First Blood, Obj 1 and Obj 5. 3 victory points!

Wraithknight!

Frank, the Wraith Knight

My turn! I had to get rid of that Wraithknight getting close. It's D and Stomp would make a mockery of my forces if it got close! Two drop pods came screaming in from the heavens landing amongst the swamp. The flamer tacticals disembarked amongst the venoms. The Grav Devs disembarked in front of the Wraith Knight. My land speeder storms moved out towards the Lord and his retinue. The dreads moved forwards towards enemy lines.

Scout trooper Meks could barely make out shapes in the darkness. He'd seen the glowing drop pod streak down from the heavens. It filled him with pride. There was a moment silence before the swamps were alight with flame. The unmistakeable screech of flamer weapons followed by howling, agonised screaming. 'Let them burn' he though, with a smirk on his face.

The flamer tacticals opened up. Two venoms were engulfed in flaming prometheum. The screams of the roasting occupants rang out the dark forest. Both venoms were emptied of occupants 'No Escape'. The sergeants hand flamer failed to ignite properly, merely singeing the occupants of the 3rd venom.

The grav gun devs opened up on the gigantic wraithknight. The arcane weaponry crushed and cracked the wraithbone shell causing 3 wounds! A good start. The Thunderfires unleashed! 10 hits! causing ZERO wounds. The sniper scouts opened up too! Causing another lucky wound. One of them finding a weak spot. The dreadnoughts, realising they must help cycled up their assault cannons and scored another wound!, only 1 left.

The landspeeder scouts fired their blinding missiles blinding the necrons approaching them! The 5 scouts jumped out of the storm and assaulted the warriors killing 3! The scouts in return suffered a single casualty. The necrons broke and were hacked to pieces by the scouts!

I scored Obj 6!

Score: 3 vs 1

TURN 2

A decent counter attack from the Black Scorpions had rattled the forces of evil. A nightscythe enters and immediately teleports 10 warriors in front of an advancing dread. The air shimmered, a smell of ozone and a flash of light. Deathmarks!
Hitlers from Hyperspace!

The Tactical occupying the swamp now stood in front of a ton of enemy fire. Venoms, Scourges and gauss opened up. They were all taken out of action.

The Deathmarks shot their synaptic disentegrators, killing a vital techmarines and a thunderfire cannon!

Warriors fired their hellish gauss weapons and wrecked a dreadnought! In doing so they'd opened up the swamps and taken back the centre of the table. This was vital for objective taking.

Ancient Zavius suffers catastrophic damage
The Necron Lord and Lych guard charged the scouts. Their optics still frazzled from the blinding missiles resulted in only 1 hit and... a 1 to wound. The scouts in turn killed a lych guard! They stayed locked in combat

The swamps now free of enemy forces!

The scouts hold on!

The Wraithknight assaulted the sniper scouts in the precinct. Zaitus (telion) was my warlord. The Warlord was a key victory point. The monstrous construct approached!

The tall engine of destruction began to climb the side of the precinct, It held aloft a mighty shimmering sword. The scout troopers panicked and fired their rifles haphazardly. Bullets pinged of the armoured hull with no effect. Zaitus took a deep breath, there was a large crack in the head of the construct. He aimed, breathed and squeezed the trigger sending a kraken bolt right into the crack. Something critical exploded outwards in a shower of sparks. The construct lurched backwards, it's legs gave way and it crumpled to the ground. A cry of celebration rang out from the scout troopers. Zaitus slammed another clip into his rifle. There was no time for cheering.

Even battle so far!
The wraithknight suffered two lucky overwatch wounds, and failed the a feel no pain and  an invulnerable save! The mighty beast was dead! A stroke of pure luck. My lines were no longer threatened and I could press the attack now!

However, with the middle now free of marines, the Evil forces scored Obj 5, Obj 2 and Ascendency (hold 3 objectives) and rolled a 3 for a 5 victory point turn! At 8 vs 1 now, it was looking bad. I had to do something!

My last drop pod arrived! Flamer tacticals again. They would avenge their brothers and take back the swamp. My landspeeder storms moved back to take care of the deathmarks. Evodius (astorath) and the death company moved up and across the precinct landing right next to the necron lord, now surrounded.

My flamer tacticals destroyed the venom controlling the swamp. The thunderfires wiped out a squad of scourges with accurate bombardment. The landspeeder storms and the sniper scouts picked off the 5 man death marks behind my lines. The dreadnoughts killed some warriors. Evodius and the death company charged into the combat!

Mortal Combat!
The tall necron warlord had recovered his vision from the blinding attacks. Evodius could see his retinue swining wildly at the nimble scouts. The Death Company dismantled the retinue with raging fury, tearing the enemy appart. As Evodius strode behind the Necron Lord he witnessed the scout sergeant duck underneath a scythes sweep and in return, land a crunching uppercut with his fist. The Necron Lord stumbled back towards Evodius in a daze. Evodius summoned his strength and brought his own mighty axe down upon the back of its head splitting it from head to groin in shower of sparks!

The Necron Lord and his retinue were torn apart by Evodius and the Death Company. Their attacks too numerous and too strong to resist. Slay the Warlord!

I'd taken back the battlefield! Scoring Slay the Warlord, Obj 5 and Ascendency (control 3 obj) scoring 2 extra victory points.

So far: Evil 8 VS Marines 5 - Still behind!

The Swamp back in Black Scorpion control!

The smoking ruin of the venom!

Necron warriors still alive!

Turn 3

Turn 3 was quick, The evil forces were running out of units but had a victory point advantage. They luckily drew cards they could achive. Assassinate! (kill characters) and funnily enough, secure obj 2... TWICE! One of the few they actually had already.

They shot my grav devs with everything in hopes of killing the sergeant. They killed 4 marines but not the sergeant. Rik's necrons blew up a second dreadnought! With that, they're turn was over, but still scored 2 more victory points! 10 - 5 so far.

The Nightscythe strafes the marines!

I got decent cards my turn but had to press on to try and snatch victory! I had to secure obj 5 (the swamp) which was firmly in my control. I had to kill 3 units in assault. Possible! and I needed Supremacy: 2 objectives and at least twice as many as your opponent. Also possible!

I sallied force! My thunderfires took out immortals. My death company moved forward. I avoided shooting in order to make sure I got into combat. I multi-charged two venoms with the death company killing both! My dreadnought and the tacticals charged the warriors annihilating them! 3 units killed in assault! I rolled two D3 dice 1 for supremacy and 1 for 3 units in assault...NOOO!!! two 1's. So I scored 3 victory points but it was not enough, I was still trailing 10-8! However, The enemy position was looking fragile! I was in good shape army-wise and they weren't!

The marines turn the tide! Now they press on... To victory?
TURN 4

With 4 units left on the table, the forces of evil would be commencing damage control! Survive, score some points and don't die! They tried for the only thing they could. Secure obj 2 (firmly in their control) and Assasinate! The necrons that had range scored two wounds on my two man dev squad!

Trooper Morz and Sergeant Carrick are gunned down!
No!!! I failed my two 3+ armour saves and my poor sergeant fell! 1 assassinate victory point for the enemy! Damn them to hell! :) Even though their forces were limited they scored 2 more victory points! 12-8.

I pressed on! Turn 4 saw me pressing the enemy back! My remaining dreadnought turned around and hunted down the tomb blades behind him. The tactical squad moved further and assaulted the immortals. In close combat the immortals held me. Locked! The tomb blades lost a member to the dreadnought, 1 remained, locked! refusing to fly away. I scored Obj 3 and 6.

So far! Evil: 12 Marines:10!

Turn 5

With two units locked and 3 scourges left, the enemy held on! The scourges shot at the death company going to objective 2 (which I needed) They scored no wounds. The immortals broke in combat and were run down by the tacticals! The remaining Tomb Blade was crushed by the dreadnought!

My turn. I drew my cards and.... needed objective 2! I had objective 2! I needed objective 6! I had objectve 6!  We rolled a 2 and the game was over!.......and I had LINEBREAKER! 3 victory points!

The forces remaining!
Scoured, Cleared, Secured!

Suffer not the alien to live!
The Boner Alliance: 12 victory points!
The Black Scorpions: 13 victory points!

Evodius strode through the muddy forest. Scraps of Necrons and mangled Dark Eldar corpses littered the forest floor. What drove them to this? What drove this unholy alliance? Evodius was content. The enemy had been routed. They would think twice before assaulting this pass again... if they did... he would be here, waiting for them.

Conclusion

What? How? Really? Victory in the most glorious fashion. Taking the game by 1 point at the last turn!

What a nail-biter. A truly fun, great game. The first few turns were a real back and forth. Lots of death and destruction but my army held on where it counted. The Evil forces racked up a strong victory point lead but I knew I could claw it back if I could hold on and push back!

Rik was unlucky with his lord getting bogged down by lowly scouts! The death of the Wraithknight, whilst juicy and critical for me was a tough blow to their plans. It allowed me to counter-attack and press back. Despite suffering several setbacks like losing dreadnoughts, rolling two bad D3's and the enemy managing score victory points continually, I think I did well to push back. This game was hugely cinematic. Lots of heroics! The scout sergeant challenging the Necron Lord...not only surviving but taking a wound off him before Evodius and the Death Company cut him down.

The Thunderfires perfored admirably scoring a decent amount of hits. Being next to Telion adds rending to them making them even more deadly. I can't even imagine what they'll be like against the likes of Guard, Ork or Tyranid armies.

Super fun game! super entertaining! Thanks guys!

Man of the Match? Scout Sergeant! He wiped the first necron squad and then tanked the Lord too!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These walking bones. 'A fiendish enemy' thought Evodius as he walked down the dimly lit corridor. The great fortress monastery of the Black Scorpions was busier than ever. Indeed the whole planetary system was choked with ships and transports. Legion Master Kaine remained tight lipped to all but the very highest leadership. 'Return home and bring every able body, ship and weapon you can find' were the orders. Detachments from all over the Eastern Fringe were arriving daily. With almost the entire Legion in system and countless other allies, mercenaries and soldiers the Arcturus system was now hugely well defended. It could only mean one thing. Total war.

Evodius, stalwart and experienced, balked at the thought of an enemy that would need the entire legion to tackle it. He quickly crushed the seed of doubt. He had more important things to worry about. Kaine himself had personally ordered Evodius' presence. 'Come alone' he was told. He was commanded bring with him the mangled remains of the Necron lord Evodius had cut down. The outlying systems had been reporting increased Necrons incursions. These bone coloured menaces had appeared without warning. Evodius wondered if this strange meeting had something to do with it. Curiously, Kaine asked Evodius to meet him, not in the grand hall, nor the Master's Chambers but in storage hall 16 in sub-level 432 of the forge complex.

Evodius made his way through the labyrinthine complex. He went deeper and deeper into the old complex. Hundreds of levels downward, deep into the facility. Heavy blast doors continually opening for him, ancient bulkheads creaking and grinding under their weight. The further he descended the more derelict it got. Dark. Rusty. Damp.

He peered round the corner into the large storage hall. He could make out the towering form of Legion Master Kaine, standing in silence in front of a small door. 'My Lord, I...' a wave of Kaine's hand was enough to silence Evodius instantly. He could see the grim look on Kaine's face.
'Evodius...my brother. You have done well these past few months. These aliens are getting bolder and I fear they may be without number. We are united as a Legion. We are one. Nobody can deny that but there are things we must keep secret. There are dangers that will ruin lesser men. Do you trust me Evodius? Do you have faith in our purpose?'

Evodius felt something he'd not felt for a hundred years. Dread. He was the Arch-Deacon. The spiritual leader of the Black Scorpions. He maintained his brothers' faith, their resolve and sense of duty! What could possibly shake that? How could Kaine question him in such a way. Kaine noticed the concern on his face and spoke softly with a hand on Evodius' shoulder. 'You are now part of the inner circle. The trusted. We guide our Legion, we keep the people of our system safe. Our task is monumental and grim but we press on. Come... Let me know show you'

They stepped through the small door. Inside was a simple service room. Tools and broken pipes lay scattered about. Kaine flicked an old switch, pulled a hanging cable and a secret panel opened. Kaine put his eye near the scanner and the room began to rumble. The wall at end slide away revealing a hidden wide corridor. All along the walls were automated weapons. Gun barrels and ammo feeds of all shapes and sides guarded the door at the far end. 'Evodius, when we enter here your armour will power down, this is normal. Machinery and electronics do not function properly beyond the door.' As they stepped through Evodius indeed felt his armour lose power. It not longer felt like a second skin. It was now heavy and required strength to move it. 'Give me those remains' asked Kaine. The shattered head of the Necron Lord was still attached to the rib-like torso. It was broken and melted in places but still, somehow, functioning at a very limited level. It twitched and groaned periodically. They walked down the corridor and a final door remained. It opened, revealing a dark room.

It was dim. At the far end of the room was a figure, crucified to the wall with heavy steel. A dull green halo was dimly glowing around the rack it was strapped to. As they got closer the being was revealed. Coppery metal, a turqoise patina covered it. Ancient. Its souless eyes stared back. Its face a grotesque masque immitating the pure human form. A cylindrical false beard protruded from its chin. It was vaguely familiar to Evodius, reminiscent of ancient terran Ægyptus but unmistakably necron. Kaine strode forward holding out the grim trophy.

'We bring you a gift Aah-un-sakh'

Evodius could barely contain his rage.
